Pustimarg-The Path Of Grace .

Pushtimarga was started by Jagad Guru Shri Vallabhjacharya (1481-1533), son of Shri Lakshman Bhatt of kankarvad, a town on the banks of river Krishna in Andhra Pradesh (India). Shri Lakshman Bhatt was a telugu Brahmin of velanadu caste. Shri Vallabhacharya some 500 years back started Pushtimarg.
Pushtimarg is made up of two words Pushti and Marg. Marg means path or the only path to go near Shrinathji. Pushti in ordinary term means healthy i.e. one who is very robust and stout as he is eating good food whereas according to Shri Vallabhacharya, Pushti means Grace of God, the Supreme Lord Shrinathji. Pushti means Krupa in Gujarati, Hindi, Sanskrit and Vraj Bhasha. Hence it follows Pushtimarg is otherwise also known as Krupa Marg.
Pushtimarg means to attain God through the path of Grace:
Why is Pushtimarg also known as Krupa Marg? Entry of a person in Pushtimarg is also only by the Grace of Shrinathji. Many people gain entry in Pushtimarg but only one in a crore person get the grace or Krupa of Shrinathji.
In Pushtimarg, Idol of child form of Lord Krishna ( Shrinathji), the child who is only crawling. Such a small child is taken care of by the worshipper or Vaishnav who is looking after the needs of the child.
It is also a "family-religion." Vallabha himself was a family man and his teaching emphasizes the virtues of family life as means to earn God's grace. "The worship of lord requires the services of all members of the family, and all are promised the highest bliss that always results from worship or seva. This mode of service makes the whole family free from wordly ties even when leading a houseolder's life. And their whole life becomes divine."
The person who has gained entry in Pushtimarg by taking the Brahmasambandh from the descendants of Shri Vallabhacharya is called a Vaishnav. Shri Vallabhacharya's other name is Vaishnavanar hence those who follow the path shown by shri Vallabhacharya (Vaishnavnar) is a Vaishnav. It is observed that to whomever Shri Vallabhacharya gave Brahmasambandh, he or she was asked to do Seva or be in attendance in the duty of Shrinathji.
In Pushtimarg when the Guru gives Brahmasambandh, such a person also on his own requests and ask for an idol (Swarup) for doing Seva.
In this form of worship that is by doing Seva to the swarup (Idol) as if the swarup is his own Son, just as we take care of our son and protect him from heat / cold so also this Swarup is to be protected from heat /Cold etc. Just as we offer food to our child in the same way while doing Seva the person has to offer food to the Swarup.
Just as we pamper our child from Morning to Night by giving him the best food, clothes or whatever he wants. So also the Swarup has to be pampered as our own child and attend to his needs. Such form or method of doing Seva or Worship is not available in any other sampradaya or religion.
Though the swarup is made up of metal or wood or stone, in Pushtimarg the Seva is done as if the Swarup is in human form (Flesh and Blood form). In pushtimarg one has to take care of the swarup and always offer him the best and always think about his comfort, but in other religion everybody worships the God / Goddess to gain something for himself and stops after he achieves the goal i.e. whatever he wants is given by the God to whom he is worshipping. But in Pushtimarg reverse is the case, whatever is offered to the God (Swarup) is not offered to gain or get something from the God but only to make him comfortable in all possible ways and not ask for any benefits from God (swarup).
In Pushtimarg the Seva of the Swarup is offered without expecting any benefits from the swarup, but in other religion duty is done for a gain or for getting benefits from the God/ Goddess whom he or she worships.
Fundamental difference between Swarup and Idol is that the swarup is considered as a person of Shrinathji in Flesh /Blood but in case of an idol it is worshipped as divine form or replica of God / Goddess whichever the person worships. In Pushtimarg no worshipping is done to the Swarup but only seva in performed. Thus there is a lot of difference between seva and Worship.Regarding the Birth of Shri Vallabhacharya. He is a reincarnation or other form of Shrinathji himself i.e. to say shrinathji took birth in human form to give salvation to those people who had committed some fault during Krishna avatar five thousand years back. As a result of their fault they were languishing in this world taking birth several times. In order to take this person back to his place, Shrinathji himself took birth in the form of human being in the house of Lakshman Bhatt.
Shri Vallabhacharyaji undertook pilgrimage of India when he was eleven years old by foot. With sole intention of giving salvation to those person who were languishing in this world. Vallabhacharyaji found those people by his divine ability and gave them Brahmasambandh and sent them back to Shrinathji after absolving all their sins committed during their stay in this world.
In Vaidik mythology it is considered that a soul has to take birth in 8400000 of species of life for every one crore of the species one is Nirguna i.e. the soul is faultless, such soul representing 8400000 species, one for each lakh is sent back to Shrinathji by Shri Vallabhacharya after he locates him and gives him Brahmasambandh.
Note:
Pushti means Divya anugrah / Divya Krupa. It also means Nourishment i.e.
1) Sharirik => Nourishment for Body.2) Adhiyatmik => Nourishment for Soul.
Pushtimarg is a devine selection or divine election of the devotees by the lord. The reason for why they are been selected is coz they are pure, chaste and simple love. And this what comes above all in pusti. It is love without any motive. Pushti bhakti is a selfless supreme love for god. Love which is Natural and Spontenious. It is a continious flow. It is an end rather then the means. It is an attainment of the supreme god who is bliss and love. Pushti bhakti is a grace of god. Here both the end and means is god. Everything is god i.e. praman, pramay, sadhan and fal. If one has to meet the god then Pushti bhakti is the only means and not the other 2 paths i.e Pravaha Marg and Maryada Marg. But Karma, Gyan and Upasna are the basic step to attain Pushti Bhakti.
In Karma marg one can make happy to god by doing as per said in scripure i.e Vidhi(Do's) and Nished(Don't). Through Gyan Marg as per the intrest of the soul he comes to know wheather it is the true goal or not. And Upasana Marg is a path of worship of the desired deties through Jap, mantra etc. But all this results to attain Akshar Bhrama and not the communion with god.
In Bhagwatji it is said that "Poshanam Tad Anugraha" i.e. If you have the blessings then only one can get Nourishment. 6th Canto of of Bhagwat is known as Pushtiskand i.e. of Ajamil. And then at 10th canto, the episode of Vraj swamniji's and Lord Krishna. Shri Mahaprabhuji's Pushti Marg is based on this 2 canto's as they are the base of Pushti Bhakti.
What is Brahmasambandh?
When Shri Vallabhacharya came to this world to give salvation to those soul that he found as impure and not worthy of association of Shrinathji who is pure in every sense. Shri Vallabhacharyaji did not want to pollute the realm of Shrinathji with this impure soul, while he was contemplating this matter while he was taking rest at night at Thakurani Ghat bank of river Jamuna at Gokul near Mathura. At midnight Shrinathji appeared in person and gave a mantra or a recital that was spoken by the soul and such a soul offer everything that he considers as his own to Shrinathji. This, Shrinathji accepts him and never forgets him.
In this mantra or recital given by Shrinathji to Mahaprabhuji is, which is originally in Sanskrit, is translated roughly here.
" For several thousands of years I have been languishing in this world for my sins committed during Krishna avatar. Now I offer myself my family, my wealth etc to you and totally surrender into you, as I belong to you, without any condition, hence please accept me back "as I am yours".
This form of promise is taken from the person who is administered from Brahmasambandh by the descendants of Shri Vallabhacharyaji.
Descendants of Shri Vallabhacharya at Nathdwara in Rajasthan -- India do the main worshipping of Shrinathji or Seva at present.
Festivals in PushtiSampradaya:
In pushtimarg , Seva is not done for achieving the grace of Shrinathji, but Seva includes festivals that are included in the curriculum of seva.
Shri Vallabhacharya started the mode of Seva of Shrinathji in a simple form. But his second son Shri Vitthalnatji became the successor of Shri Vallabhacharya who was also incarnation of Shrinathji with some divine abilities as Shri Vallabhacharya. Shri Vitthalnathji introduced many reforms in this Seva of Pushtimarg, just as a small child would like to have variety of toys and dresses which would keep him happy. So also Shri Vitthalnathji introduced a variety of reforms in the performance of Seva of Shrinathji.
He started observing festivals starting with the birth of Lord Shri Krishna. This Festival is known as Krishna Janmashtmi, in this festival all the rituals in minute form are observed which had taken place at the time of birth of Shri Krishna. In this festival Krishna Janmashatmi which is the main festival, which falls on eighth day of gujarati month shravan Krishna paksha which falls in the month of august according to English calendar.
This festival is performed with all the pomp and joy as if a son is born in the family. On the night of shravan 8th Krishna paksha the birth of Lord Krishna took place at midnight, though the birth of Lord Krishna took place in jail of Mathura to Vasudev and devaki (For the details of Lord Krishna one should read the 10th skanda of Shrimath bhagavad) he was brought to Gokul by his father Vasudev for lord Krishna's safety. As Devaki feared that her brother Kamsa will kill the small boy, which was the 8th child of Devaki.
Preparation for this festival is made in a Vaishnav's house some four or five days before the actual date. New clothes or vaghas of saffron color made of cotton or stitched by the ladies of Vaishnava family. Where the Seva of Lord Shrinathji (Lord Balakrishna) is done according to the guidance introduced by Shri Vitthalnathji, this guidance is known as Pranalika. Every Vaishnav has to strictly follow this guidance (Pranalika). These Vaishnava's should not do Seva according to his whims and fancies.

DIWALI

Diwali in history
The history of Diwali is replete with legends and these legends are moored to the stories of Hindu religious scriptures, mostly the Puranas. Though the central theme of all legends point out to the classic truth of the victory of the good over the evils, the mode of their presentation and the characters differ. Diwali, being the festival of lights, lighting the lamp of knowledge within us means to understand and reflect upon the significant purpose of each of the five days of festivities and to bring those thoughts in to the day to day lives. The five day of DiwaliThe first day of Diwali is called Dhanvantari Triodasi or Dhanwantari Triodasi also called Dhan Theras. The second day of Diwali is called Narak Chaturdasi. It is the fourteenth lunar day (thithi) of the dark forthnight of the month of Kartik and the eve of Diwali. On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and made the world free from fear. The third day of Diwali is the actual Diwali. This is the day when worship for Mother Lakshmi is performed. On the fourth day of Diwali, Goverdhan Pooja is performed. The fifth day of the diwali is called Bhratri Dooj. It is a day dedicated to sisters. Hindu MythologyThe Story of Rama and Sita: Lord Rama was a great warrior King who was exiled by his father Dashratha, the King of Ayodhya, along with his wife Sita and his younger brother Lakshman, on his wife's insistence. Lord Rama returned to his Kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, in which he put an end to the demon Ravana of Lanka, who was a great Pundit, highly learned but still evil dominated his mind. After this victory of Good over Evil, Rama returned to Ayodhya. In Ayodhya, the people welcomed them by lighting rows of clay lamps. So, it is an occasion in honor of Rama's victory over Ravana; of Truth's victory over Evil. The Story of King Bali and Vamana Avatar(the Dwarf): The other story concerns King Bali, who was a generous ruler. But he was also very ambitious. Some of the Gods pleaded Vishnu to check King Bali's power. Vishnu came to earth in the form of a Vamana(dwarf) dressed as priest. The dwarf approached King Bali and said "You are the ruler of the three worlds: the Earth, the world above the skies and the underworld. Would you give me the space that I could cover with three strides?" King Bali laughed. Surely a dwarf could not cover much ground, thought the King, who agreed to dwarf's request. At this point, the dwarf changed into Vishnu and his three strides covered the Earth, the Skies and the whole Universe! King Bali was send to the underworld. As part of Diwali celebrations, some Hindus remember King Bali. The Defeat of Narkasur by Lord Krishna: Lord Vishnu in his 8th incarnation as Krishna destroyed the demon Narkasura, who was causing great unhappiness amongst the people of the world. Narkasura was believed to be a demon of filth, covered in dirt. He used to kidnap beautiful young women and force them to live with him. Eventually, their cries for rescue were heard by Vishnu, who came in the form of Krishna. First, Krishna had to fight with a five-headed monster who guarded the demon's home. Narkasura hoped that his death might bring joy to others. Krishna granted his request and the women were freed. For Hindus, this story is a reminder that good can still come out of evil. Krishna and The Mountain: In the village of Gokula, many years ago, the people prayed to the God Indra. They believed that Indra sent the rains, which made their crops, grow. But Krishna came along and persuaded the people to worship the mountain Govardhan, because the mountain and the land around it were fertile. This did not please Indra. He sent thunder and torrential rain down on the village. The people cried to Krishna to help. Krishna saved the villagers by lifting the top of the mountain with his finger. The offering of food to God on this day of Diwali is a reminder to Hindus of the importance of food and it is a time for being thankful to God for the bounty of nature.

RATH-YATRA

Rath Yatra Uatsav in pushtimarg - dt. 25/june/2009.
Rath-yatra utsav is celebrated on Ashad Sood 2. In Haveli they check the "Pushiya Nakshatra and then abode Shree Thakorji in the Rath. In Pushtimarg, we depict the bhava of Shree Yasodaji, who first time made Shree Krishna sit in a rath and as Shree Krishna was a balak, Yasodaji did not strap the horses to the rath (chariot) because she thought that Balak Krishna would get frighten with the horses. All Vraj Bhakto took turns to pull the chariot. Yasodaji walked beside the rath and when Krishna gets frighten she holds Him and calms Him down. In front of the chariot the balak Vraj Bhakta holds flags, banners, Umbrellas and fans and walk slowly in the front of the chariot. This Balbhav Rath-yatra is of Lila bhava.
Where horses are connected to rath it is known as Kishore lila. In this Bhava Shree Thakorji sits with Svaminiji in the rath and rath is surrounded by Sakhi gopis.
Shree Jagadish Rath has sixteen wheels, Baldevji's rath has twelve wheels and Subadraji's rath has eight wheels.
The Rath-yatra Utsava is not celebrated in Shree Nathji. In Shree Nathji they believe that the Utsava is "chal" (active and flowing) bhava and Shree Nathji is "sthir"(still) bhava. So Shree Gusainji decided not to celebrate the Rath-yatra in Shree Nathji. It was also the day when Shree Mahaprabhuji did "Ashoor Viyahmoh Lila" and this was also the reason the main swaroop in Shree Nathji does not celebrate Rath-yatra.
So taking the Ashoor Viyahmoh Lila into account Thakorji, wears white vastra (cloths) and in the evening the umbrella (kharsal) is removed

Story of Lord Narasimha

Hiranyakashipu (the brother of Hiranyaksha who was killed by the Varaha Avtar) wanted to take revenge on the Devatas and in particular on Lord Vishnu. He wanted to become the master of all the three worlds - Heaven, Earth & Pathala. He went to Mount Mandarachala and began penance which continued for years. Due to the intensity of Penance, Lord Brahma appeared before Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyakashipu asked for immortality as boon. Brahma, however, declined, saying "All living beings must face death Hiranyakashipu. You can, however, choose your death wish."
Hiranyakashipu then asked for three conditions, as his death wish, "'O Brahma, let not death come to me either by man or beast, nor devil, nor god shall cause my death by day or by night with steel or stone or wood, indoors or outdoors, or earth or in sky. Grant me undisputed lordship over the world". Brahma agreed and Hiranyakashipu got his death wishes granted. Thus he became practically immortal. After securing such a boon Hiranyakashipu conquered the worlds and became a tyrant. He banned all poojas on Vishnu and declared himself as God. The Devtas approached Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu asked them to be patient and said, "Hiranyakashipu' s son Prahlad is a devotee of me. When Hiranyakashipu seeks to kill my devotee I will slay him." Hiranyakashipu's wife Kayadhu gave birth to Prahlad in the Ashrama of Narada who told Prahlad about the glory of Lord Vishnu. Prahlad grew up and became an ardent devotee of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu, however, wanted his son to be the king of the Asuras, strong and ruthless. Realising that Prahlad always prayed to Lord Vishnu, Hiranyakashipu took his son to Shanku and Amarka, the sons of Shukracharya, for schooling. All their efforts to inflence Prahlad failed.
Hiranyakashipu ordered his servents to kill Prahlad if he refused to accept the supremacy of his father. They tried to kill him by throwing down a mountain, drowning, poisoning, burning etc. and failed in all attempts since Lord Vishnu saved him from all the attempts. The king got angry on hearing the reports about Prahlad. One day the king challenged his son in the open court:
"Prahlad! Is my enemy, whom you worship, present anywhere here?".
Prahlad replied, "Vishnu is omnipresent. There's not a single place where he's not found."
Hiranyakashipu's fury was at its climax. He got an iron pillar heated and asked Prahlad, "Can you embrace this pillar if your Vishnu is in it also?"Prahlad did not hesitate even for a moment but rushed towards the pillar and embraced it. The heated iron did not burn him. The king got up from his throne in fury and hit the pillar with his mace.
And to his surprise! The pillar cracked with a thundering sound and Vishnu appeared there in the form of Narasimha.
One half of his body was of a lion and the other half of a man. He had matted hair on his head, large moustaches on the face and terrible teeth in the mouth. His paws had terrible nails on them.
Hiranyakashipu remembered his first death wish, "To be killed by some one who is neither human nor beast." It was also the twilight hour, neither day nor night, the second death wish.
The demon king hit Narasimha with his mace but Narasimha brushed it aside swiftly. It was twilight and Narasimha caught hold of the demon Hiranyakashipu.
He sat on the threshold of the court room, placed the body of the demon on his thighs, and pierced his nails into the body of the demon and broke open his stomach. The demon was killed on the spot in a moment. The place was neither inside nor outside. This was Hiranyakashipu’s third death wish.
Lord Narasimha was furious and roared. However, he was passified when Prahlad touched his feet and goddess Lakshmi also tried to cool him. Lord Narasimha then made Prahlad the King.

PUSHTIMARG

In the 15th century, our great Guru Shri Vallabhacharyji Mahaprabhuji was born. He is believed to be incarnation of God representing the face of God. While very young, he studied all the Shastras and became a master. He toured over most parts of India on foot and observed that people had taken to worldly vices. Honesty was lost and most had become impious and hypocritical. He observed that not only the paths of Action and Knowledge but the path of Bhakti (Maryada) was not practicable. When he entered Gokul. It was midnight of the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of the month of Shravan of Samvat year 1549. his mind was revolving on the important question of restoring people to the right path of devotion. During the first phase of his pilgrimage he observed that people were divided not only politically and culturally but also spiritually and religiously. Besides, the lives of many were not in consonance with the spiritual teachings. He felt the Vedic rituals had lost their significance and the Mantras were ineffective. The holy places had lost their sanctity, the priestly class were corrupt and those that be took to religious instruction, lacked purity, He conceived the souls of men into three types : (1) the worldly-minded souls, (2) the spiritually-minded souls and (3) the divine souls who aspired for the union with God through devotion (Bhakti). The Acharya was most concerned with the last kind of the souls. When his mind was exceedingly troubled over this question, Suddenly Lord Krishna - Shri Gokulchandramaji (Shrinathji) appeared in front of him. Lord then told him, “Dear one, Your anxiety about the spiritual regeneration of divine souls is well founded. The only way is by self-dedication or consecration of self to Me They should realize that only by consecrating themselves, thier lives, wealth, wives, children, their all to Me can they obtain key to union with Me. They should acknowledge their unstinted duty to Me with humility. Then i shall accept them and gave “Gadya mantra” (Formula for reunion with the lord). Vallabh was very pleased, He offered a garland of cotton thread (pavitra)and mishri to the lord.Next morning, he expounded Pushtimarg by intiating his chief and dearest disciple Damodardas Harsani with Brahmasambandh. Pushti means grace of Lord. Pushtimarga is the path of acquiring the grace of God.Efforts are not enough to acquire this grace. When the Lord bestows the Jivas with His grace, then and then only Jiva can acquire his grace. But, aspirant Jiva can easily acquire this grace through his acceptance by Shri Shrimad Vallabhacharya. For acquiring this grace of God. one has to follow Pushtimarg. He has to accept Shrimad Vallabhacharya as his Guru. If he is found fit, then Shrimad Vallabhacharya accepts him as a disciple and initiates him with Brhamasambandha. Jiva has nothing of its own. So while getting initiated with Brhmasamdanda, one has to dedicate everything, including the soul itself, to God and has to become a humble servant of the Lord. He has to accept absolute surrender to God. Then his duty is only to serve to the best of his ability his master. In this Manrta the Jeevatma introduces itself. It says
1) I am part of Bhagvan Shri Krishna2) I have been seperated from him for thousands of years3) Hence I have forgotten Bhagvan Krishna completely4) I have not felt the need or the thirst to seek Him and reunite with Him. Now I have come to realize that mistake. I am such an embodied soul. Jeevatma pledges in front of Him, ‘Oh Krishna! My body, It’s ten Sensory organs, this life, my mind, my husband/wife, my Children, my family, any house, all my wealth, all my Karmas in this life and lives hereafter, along with my ‘atma soul’, I surrender to you. you are their Master from today. Nothing is mine, everything is yours. I will not use any of above for my happiness, But I will use it in my capacity as your servant, oh Krishna! I am yours. He doesn’t have to worry about himself or his dependents - Lord himself will take care of him. He has not to ask or expect anything in exchange for his services. He has to serve his master with pure love and just to serve his master with pure love and just for the sake of love. God will give him what he needs but not what he asks.
By initiation with Brhmasambanda, all the sins of the soul are burnt. He becomes sinless and pious. But to save himself from sins in future, he should act in such a way that except for the name of God, nothing enters his mind. he has to dedicate everthing he eats, drinks. and after the use of it by god he should use it as Prasad of God.
Thus, Pushti is a path of pure love and devotion. It is dedicated to God before you use it. If you have anything you have to dedicate it to God before you use it. If you have nothing. God is pleased with your loving devotion. Pushtimarg is the path in which you can be in the company of God in your present life as well as in the life after …….

Anughraha.

" पोषणंतदअनुग्रह " Which means that Shree Krishna's grace (anughraha) is called the Pushti Leela. Normally Pushti is not a word used too often as Anughraha. Pushti the word is made from Poshan. Poshan means Anughraha. The work that cannot be done by dicipline or hardwork can only be done by the grace of Krishna. " अनुघ्राह्तो लोकसिद्धि "A girl born in a poor family does not have any means to become a queen but if the king wishes(grace) he can make her the queen. Anughrahah is a character of Shree Krishna. In Shrimad Vallabhacharya's Bhagvat Tatvarth Deep Nibandh it is written that :" पुष्टि कालादिबाधिका "As Sun's character is to give light so is grace the character of Shree Krishna. This grace cannot be achieved by any means and solely depends on the wishes of Shri Krishna.Who ever he thinks is fit for the grace, he showers his grace on them and fulfills all their alokik wishes. The sixth skandh of Shrimad Bhagvatam according to Shrimad Vallabhacharya's SUBHODINI is called the Pushti leela. Vritrasur being of the Demonic race was able to get darshan of Narayana and get his grace. .this is called ANUGRAHAH..............................
